Nev Schulman, an
adult living in New York City was trying to figure out his place in the world
when he had a crazy first-hand catfish experience. A catfish is a person who uses a fake
identity online in the hopes of forming a relationship with someone. As explained in the book In Real Life:
Love, Lies, & Identity in the Digital Age and his own personal
documentary, Nev fell under the trap of a woman pretending to be multiple
people online. Through explaining is own
situation, he establishes his credibility as an author of the new-age idea of
catfishing. Nev is 30 years old and is now
most commonly known for being the host of the hit MTV reality show
Catfish. This TV show precedes his own
documentary and follows the stories of people who are stuck in similar catfish
situations. He helps to bring two people
in an online relationship to meet in real life, in the hopes that no one is
lying about their identity and their relationship can thrive. Unfortunately, this is most often not the
case. After a few seasons of the show,
he decided to write a book. The book,
while using catfish stories as examples, goes way beyond what the TV show
focuses on. The book has three sections,
the first discusses the many types of catfish and the type people that fall for
catfish. In the second, Nev discusses
smarter and more efficient ways to deal with the Internet in the technology
driven society we live in today. Last he
delves into how to keep in touch with reality and focus on the real world
around you, not just the online world.
